How was the Wall of China built?

Construction took a long time. In 211 BC, the feudal lord Qin unified part of what is now China and became emperor.

 At the time, the borders of the country had dozens of small mud walls, wet sand or wood, raised since the 7th century BC To strengthen protection against the northern tribes, Qin decided to unite these walls

From then, the wall was enlarged, reaching the peak in the reign of  the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). 

The process of construction evolved: after breaking stones with picks at the foot of the mountains, the workers (usually peasants of the region) carried them on the backs of goats to the work. 

There, they laid stones and clay bricks in bamboo basins. To erect the pieces, they used ropes and pulleys

The Route of the Silk route used by traders of the West and the East, passed through the area covered by the wall . Over time, the construction, which had strictly military function, assimilated some services of the route, such as the use of couriers. Messengers roamed the wall from end to end and descended into villages near support constructions

During the Ming period, the wall became a dwelling for up to 1 million guards, who walked between the observation posts, preserving the borders and observing the possible movement of enemies, especially the Mongols. In this phase, the wall was already a kind of linear fortress

The guards made morning rounds and in the light of day, circulated among the observation posts, while preparing food or colleagues were the maintenance of weapons. Communication between the towers was made by smoke signals. The fires were lit with straw mixed with feces from soldiers and pack animals

The wall lost military utility when China expanded its borders.

 In the 19th century, it began to attract tourists. Parts of the work that are in distant regions are worn and decaying.

 Besides the time, the fault is also of the former dictator Mao Tsé-tung, who in the years 1960 and 1970 removed whole pieces of the wall to build houses
